A qualitative layer before, during or after quantitative HVAC work
ASHRAE Standard 111 addresses measurement, testing, adjusting, balancing, evaluating and reporting HVAC performance. A utility fogger can complement that work by showing where instruments should be placed and whether the observed pattern matches the design intent.
It cannot establish flow rate, pressure, air changes, ventilation rate or compliance by observation alone.

A disciplined HVAC visualization workflow
Freeze the operating condition
Record fan commands, damper positions, door state, loads, temperatures and control mode.
Establish measurement data
Capture available flow, pressure, temperature and velocity readings before introducing fog.
Place the source deliberately
Use the smallest useful output and position the source so it does not block or drive the stream.
Record multiple views
Use fixed reference points, lighting and wide plus close camera angles.
Repeat one variable at a time
Change only the defined control, obstruction or door condition.
Reconcile observation and measurements
Treat disagreement as a diagnostic lead—not as permission to discard calibrated data.

Does fog replace TAB?
No. Testing, adjusting and balancing uses calibrated measurements and defined procedures. Fog adds a qualitative visualization layer.
Should I inject fog into ductwork?
Only under an approved method that addresses equipment, filters, sensors, fire systems, occupants, material compatibility and the selected fog medium. Room-side visualization is often lower risk.
