Airflow Visualization Study Planning Guide

Use this framework to define the objective, operating condition, source, camera, measurements, repetitions and decision logic before the test begins.

Nine elements of a useful airflow visualization study

Objective

Define the exact airflow question and the decision the study will support.

Scope

Identify rooms, equipment, openings, processes and exclusions.

Operating state

Record fans, doors, dampers, loads, interventions and occupancy.

Tracer and equipment

Document fog medium, unit, output setting, water/cryogen and accessories.

Source placement

Specify location, height, orientation and distance from the airflow feature.

Camera and lighting

Fix viewpoints, background, contrast, frame reference and time markers.

Measurements

Define velocity, pressure, flow, temperature or other instrument data collected in parallel.

State number of runs and controlled variable changes.

Define acceptance, diagnostic conclusion, deviation and retest rules.

Source control

The tracer must not dominate the airflow

Use the minimum output that remains visible. Record the outlet, hose, wand, distance and angle. Where possible, verify the source in a known low-velocity condition before interpreting the study.

If changing the fogger setting changes the apparent result, the study may be observing source behavior rather than facility airflow.

Video controls

Make the recording reviewable by someone who was not present

  • Begin with a wide establishing view.
  • Show room, equipment, door and operator positions.
  • Use stable lighting and a contrasting background.
  • Avoid the operator blocking critical airflow.
  • Record the source placement and output setting.
  • Include timestamps or run identifiers.
  • Capture the full sequence before, during and after each intervention.
  • Retain original files and controlled copies.
Regulated work

Escalate the protocol when the study supports sterile or classified operations

FDA observations repeatedly criticize smoke studies that fail to represent actual equipment and interventions or that obscure the critical airflow. Formal cleanroom work should be governed by the applicable protocol and quality system, not by this general planning page.

How many runs should I record?

Enough to demonstrate repeatability for the defined decision. The number belongs in the approved plan; one visually convenient run may not be representative.

Should the fogger operator appear in the video?

Only as needed, and without obscuring the airflow being evaluated. Operator position and movement should be controlled and documented.
